Winternational Junior Series Kicks off 22nd Consecutive Year at Pinehurst Resort

Village of Pinehurst, NC
November 15, 2015

The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of eight championship events for high school age boys and girls, played its first event of the 2015-2016 Season this weekend at Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC.  The series is the oldest of its kind in the Country, and since its inception in 1994, over 2,600 young men and women have passed through its membership. Included in the past membership are PGA Tour players Dusting Johnson, Jason Dufner, Webb Simpson and Jason Kokrak.  This year nearly 125 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the events on six of the nine Pinehurst Resort courses, including two events on Donald Ross’ famous Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the players are divided into three divisions; one for Junior and Senior boys; one for Freshmen and Sophomores boys; and one for Girls. This weekend saw both Saturday and Sunday with clear sunny skies and temperatures in the mid 60’s.
In the Junior/Senior Boys Division, a familiar name was victorious and dominated the field with a twelve shot victory. Brantley Phillips from Greensboro, NC was not only named to the All-American team in the last Winternational Junior Series but was also named Player of the Year. The senior, a left-hander, made seven birdies during the two round event and his 36+33=69 in the final round was the low round for the division. Brantley is undecided on where he will play college golf but there is no doubt he will entertain offers in the not to distant future. Finishing as runner-up was Zach Freeman from Angier, NC with a 76+77=153 total. In third place from Pinehurst, NC was Nash Neptune who finished on shot behind Freeman. Fourth place was captured by Bradley Calloway from Asheboro, NC.

A Winternational Newcomer Kenan Poole, II from Raleigh, NC came from one shot back after Saturday’s first round to claim a four stroke victory on Sunday. His 77+76=153 was highlighted by his final nine holes with a score of 37 which spelled the difference between himself and runner-up Rob Salisbury from Winston-Salem, NC. Salisbury forged into the lead with three early birdies and his 76 on Sunday tied Poole for low round in the division. In third place was Matthew Hayes from Clayton, NC and in fourth was Whitt Edwards of Greensboro, NC.

Another Winternational Junior Series newcomer Julianne Strauch, a Junior from Advance, NC, was victorious in the Girls Division. Strauch, from Forsyth Country Day H.S., played the par three holes in even par for the entire tournament. In second place was Carmen Tucker of Fayetteville, NC and in third was Meghan McPeak from Chapel Hill.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its second event Nov. 28-29, which will take place on the Tom Fazio redesign Pinehurst No. 4 course.
