2016-2017 Players of the Year and All Americans


The twenty-third annual Winternational Junior Series at Pinehurst concluded its season this weekend on the Pinehurst No. 5 Course. Nearly one hundred high school boys and girls were members during the 2016-2017 Season.  The Winternationals, an eight-tournament series, has been based in Pinehurst since its inception and conducts championships on all of the Pinehurst Championship layouts.  Competition was held in three separate divisions, Junior/Senior, Freshman/Sophomore and Girls.

In the Junior-Senior Division, Trey Capps of Garner, NC claimed Player of the Year (POY) honors with his stellar play. The Garner Magnet High School Senior captured three event titles and two second place finishes on the year. Capps was a member of the All-American Team during the 2015-2016 season.

Others from the Junior-Senior Division named All-Americans were; Chad Allison (Cary, NC), Joseph Gesell (Greensboro, NC), Carter Cheek (Cary, NC), and Jacob Steinert (Pittsboro, NC).

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Jake Newman led the way much of the season with three wins and a few top five finishes. The Sophomore out of Sunset, SC played in seven out of eight events.

Others from the Freshman/Sophomore Division named All-Americans were; Josh Newman (Sunset, SC), Noah Conner (Reidsville, NC), Owen Swavely (Mooresville, NC), Luke Michael (Trinity, NC)

Mallory Fobes of East Bend, NC claimed the POY honors in the girls division with a perfect four wins. In addition she had two other victories and two runner-up finishes to round out the season. Only a player’s top four finishes count towards the POY honors in each age division.

Ten high school boys and one girl were awarded All-American status because of their tournament results for the eight events.  The point system is based on the four highest point totals for each individual across the eight-event series.  The Winternational All-Americans and their hometown are:
