  Event 2

Newman, Williams, and Fobes take Event 2 Titles

Village of Pinehurst, NC
November 27, 2016

THe Winternational Junior Series concluded its second event of the season this past holiday weekend. Great weather provided an ideal opportunity for these high school aged boys and girls to walk off some Thanksgiving Day turkey. Course No. 4 played host this weekend, which is slated for a complete overhaul by Gil Hanse. The project will start in the fall of 2017.

In the Freshman/Sophomore division Jake Newman, a sophomore from Sunset, SC was victorious by an eight shot margin. Newman, in his first trip ever to Pinehurst had four birdies in his opening round. His 38-35=73 first round was shot in a blustery 15-20mph cold north wind. His five shot lead after Saturday was more than enough to spur him on to victory. Joint runner-up in the division was shared by Garrett Risner a freshman from Holly Springs, NC and Noah Connor a sophomore from Reidsville, NC.

Mallory Fobes was again victorious in this second tournament of the series as she defeated Grace Olmstead of Four Oaks, NC and Michaela Cox of Greensboro, NC. The latter two finished tied for runner up. Fobes a sophomore of Forbush High School shot a 86-88=174 total for a ten shot victory.

Mason Williams a junior from Bridgeport, WV, was victorious in the Junior/Senior Division. Williams was four shots in the lead after Saturday’s first round and extended that lead on Sunday with a fine two-over par final nine to win by six strokes. In second place was a senior from Garner, NC, Trey Capps. Capps was named to the Winternational Junior Series All-American team in the 2015-2016 series. In third place from Cary, NC was Carter Cheek.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its third event December 10-11, which will take place with one round on the famed Donald Ross design Pinehurst No. 2 and one round on the classic Pinehurst No. 3.  Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
