Capps, Crumrine, and Newman Victorious in Event #4

Village of Pinehurst, NC
January 15, 2017

What a difference a week can make. After needing to postpone last weekend due to winter storm Helena the Winternational Junior series played Event 4 under rather mild conditions. Tom Fazio’s Centennial No. 8 played host to the series’ first event of 2017. Later this year in May, Pinehurst No. 8 will have the honor of being the co-host course along with No. 2 for the USGA’s 3rd U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship.

In the Junior/Senior Division Trey Capps of Garner, NC finally claimed victory. After finishing runner-up in the last two events, Capps was able to take home his first title of the season. The 2015-2016 All-American team member was able to maintain his four-shot lead he earned during Saturday’s first round to finish 84+79=163. In the runner-up position was Joseph Gesell of Greensboro, NC. Gesell won divisional low round honors with a 78 on Sunday. Rounding out the top three was Brandon Whitely of Huntersville, NC.

In the Girls Division, first time participant Caroline Crumrine of Wilmington, NC was victorious. Crumrine a freshman at Cape Fear Academy defeated Mallory Fobes of East Bend, NC by two shots. The two girls tied on Sunday both shooting 83 and the margin of victory was spelled on Saturday’s opening round when the champion managed four 3’s on her card.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division Jake Newman of Sunset, SC won his second event of the current series by shooting a fine even par 72 in the final round. Trailing by one shot after the opening round Newman fired three birdies in his 36+36=72 round. Runner-up was Noah Connor of Reidsville, NC. His final round 73 catapulted him tied fourth to his second place finish. In third place was Ethan Hall of Morehead City, NC.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its Fifth event on January 21-22, which will take place on Pinehurst No. 6.  Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
