January 22, 2017

The Winternational Jr. Series made its way back to Pinehurst No. 6 for its fifth event of the series. Although usually troubled more by winter like elements, this weekend’s event saw warm conditions with occasional rain showers and even a fog delay.

In the Junior/Senior Division Chad Allison of Cary, NC was victorious. Allison a junior out of Grace Christian School fired the divisional low round of 80 in Saturday’s first round. His four stroke lead coupled with solid play in Sunday’s final round was enough to spell the difference over runner-up Jacob Steinert of Pittsboro, NC. With the win Allison breaks the tie at the top of the Player of the Year points race he had shared with the events third place finisher Joseph Gesell of Greensboro, NC.

Mallory Fobes of East Bend, NC took home the victory in the Girls Division over Michaela Cox of Greensboro, NC. Only two shots separated Fobes and Cox following the first round. However, it was the front nine of Sunday’s final round where Mallory was able to pull away shooting 86+80=166 for the win. This marks her third win of the season and takes a commanding lead in the Player of the Year Points Race.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division Jake Newman of Sunset, SC took home his second consecutive victory and third overall of the series. Sitting five shots back after Saturday’s first round, Newman was able to turn his deficit into a two stroke lead by shooting an even par 36 during his first nine holes in route to a 84+79=163. First round leader Alex Price of Purcellville, VA finished tied for second with Jake’s brother, Josh Newman.
