Winternationals Conducts Inaugural Four Ball

Village of Pinehurst, NC
February 5, 2017

The Winternational Junior Series concluded its 6th event of the season this past weekend on Course No. 4. The event also happened to be the first ever Four-Ball championship of the Winternational Series. Warmer Sunday temperatures provided relief on the final day of competition in contrast to the harsh conditions Saturday.  Later this spring Pinehurst will be hosting the 3rd U.S. Amateur Four-Ball on the soon-to-be remodeled No. 4.

The champions were Trey Capps and Daniel Barbare of Garner, NC. Capps, a senior and former Winternational All-American team member, led the team with 5 birdies over the 36-hole event. Their 74-70-144 total was good enough for a 4 shot victory over the team of Chad Allison and Ryan Vanderpohl, both of Cary, NC. The champions extended their 1 shot first round lead with a fine 2-under par 70 in the final round. Although Barbare only made 2 birdies, he held par a number of times in the 2 round championship. The champions are teammates at the Garner Magnet School and have played high school golf together. Although this will be Capp’s last year, Barbare is a junior and will return.  Tied for third with their identical 152 totals were Jake and Josh Newman of Sunset, SC, and Thomas Cook of Sterling, VA and his partner, Owen Swavely of Mooresville, NC.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its seventh event on February 18-19, with one round on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 and one round on the classic Pinehurst No. 1.
