Results will be posted at the Conclusion of Play Sunday

Village of Pinehurst, NC
February 19, 2017

Recent history of the Winternationals would have told you February has not been a kind month to these high school aged boys and girls. Typically frigid temperatures and/or snow and ice have plagued the series during the second month of the year, however not this time. Contestants this weekend welcomed the warm weather as they competed on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 and the classic Pinehurst No 1 courses. With the season series winding down it was a great opportunity for members to make a move in the season long point’s race.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, sophomore Noah Connor of Reidsville, NC shot a four under par 138 for a twelve shot victory. Connor a student at Rockingham County High School posted nine birdies and an eagle over the 36-hole championship. He played the final ten holes in Sundays final round in seven under par. Noah, a former Tarheel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) event champion at Finely Golf Course, easily out-distanced a trio who tied for runner-up honors. Jake Newman of Sunset, SC, Keegan Shreves of Potomac, MD and Cade Hancock of Elizabethtown, NC all finished runners-up with two day scores of 150. By virtue of his victory Connor could be in the running for an All-American team member birth in the Division with a strong showing in the final event.

In the Girls Division Mallory Fobes of East Bend, NC won her fourth title of the current series and with it cemented her Player of the Year distinction in the 2016-2017 series. Fobes a sophomore at Forbush High School shot an 84+84=168 four a five shot victory over Michaela Cox of Greensboro, NC.

In the Junior/Senior Division Trey Capps an All-American team member from last season was again victorious with an outstanding 72+72=144 total. Capps, a senior from Garner Magnet High School in Garner NC made five birdies, six bogeys and all the rest pars for his one over par 36-hole total. Trey has reigned victorious in three 36-hole events in the first seven. In the runner-up position was Winternational newcomer Jack Neenan of Naperville, IL. In third place was Charter Cheek a junior from Athens Drive High School.
