Village of Pinehurst, NC
March 5, 2017

The final event of the Winternational Junior Series (WNJS) twenty-third season was played Saturday and Sunday at on the Pinehurst No. 5 course. Just prior to the start of Sunday’s final round, WNJS Founder Peter DeYoung, presented the Shulby Sportsmanship Award. The Shulby award is presented to a WNJS player who exemplifies the honor, integrity, and sportsmanship that comes with the game of golf. An honor not given each year but was awarded in 2016. Josh Newman was deserving here in the 2016-2017 season.

Travon Willis of Indian Trail, NC claimed victory in the Junior/Senior Division. The Porter Ridge HS Junior had a three shot lead following Saturday’s first round. A solid 79 on day two was enough to maintain his lead for a three shot victory over runner-up Charter Cheek of Cary, NC. Cheek, a junior from Athens Drive HS cut the lead to one stroke mid-way through the back nine but was unable to catch Travon.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division Narayan Mohan fired a two-over par 73+73=146 to win this last event of the series. Mohan, a newcomer to the WNJS had five birdies over the two-day stretch which propelled him to victory. Runner-up and WNJS Player of the Year was Jake Newman of Sunset, SC. Newman posted rounds of 76+75=151 to finish five shots back.

Mallory Fobes continued her dominate play in the Girls Division. The Forbush High School Sophomore posted rounds of 84+84=168 for her sixth victory of the season and fourth in a row. Lara Mullins from Concord, NC and a WNJS newcomer finished in the runner-up position.
