Winternationals Kicks off 2018

Village of Pinehurst, NC
January 14, 2018

Tom Fazio’s Centennial No. 8 played host to the series’ first event of 2018. After cold weather and snow required Event #4 to be rescheduled, the cold snap came back and forced the event to be reduced to 27-holes. After relatively seasonal weather on Saturday’s first round, Sunday greeted the high school boys and girls with real feel conditions near freezing.

In the Junior/Senior Division Chase Clayton of Locust, NC was victorious by a six shot margin. The high school junior fired a division low round of 79 on Saturday good enough for a one shot lead over Jake Newman. Clayton was able to pull away on Sunday by posting a two over par 38. Newman, the runner-up out of Charlotte, stayed close to the lead however a bogey-bogey finished spelled the difference. Rounding out the top three was Brantley Phillips a junior also from Locust, NC.

Vitoria Ladd claimed her first win of the 2017-2018 season. Her rounds of 79+40=119 were strong enough for a seven shot victory over Winternational newcomer Bailee Twiford. After opening with triple bogey Ladd, from Greensboro, NC, was able to bounce back with birdies on the long par 5 11th hole and the short par 4 12th. Twiford a junior from Coinjock, NC started Sunday just two shots back however could not get anything going to make a charge to the top. In third place was Mara Hirtle from Pinehurst, NC

Playing in his third event of the season, Kunakorn Tang from Raleigh, NC, claimed the top spot in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. His 78 in the first round provided him a three shot lead from which he never looked back. Josh Newman from Charlotte, NC was able to move up two spots after round one and finish in the runner-up slot posting rounds of 82+42=124. Pinehurst resident Jay Hoshall rounded out the top three.

The Winternational Junior Series will hold its Fifth event on January 20-21, which will take place on Pinehurst No. 5. Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
