  Event 1

Winternational Junior Series Concludes its 24th Season at Pinehurst

Village of Pinehurst, NC
March 4, 2018

The final event of the Winternational Junior Series (WNJS) twenty-fourth season was played Saturday and Sunday at on the Pinehurst No. 1 course. Just prior to the start of Sunday’s final round, WNJS Founder Peter DeYoung, presented the Shulby Sportsmanship Award. The Shulby award is presented to a WNJS player who exemplifies the honor, integrity, and sportsmanship that comes with the game of golf. An honor not given each year but was recently awarded in 2017. Owen Swavely of Mooresville, NC was a unanimous decision among the committee here in the 2017-2018 season.

The last event of the series saw Chase Clayton of Locust, NC victorious once again. Clayton shot 75+72=147 for a three shot win. This was his third victory of the series and cinched the Player of the Year award. The runner-up position was taken by Jake Newman of Charlotte, who was last year’s Player of the Year in the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Travon Willis a senior from Indian Trail, NC secured the third place trophy with a 77+75=152.

In the Freshman/Sophomore division a freshman from Florence, SC, Gene Ziegler was a five shot winner on scores of 76, 72. On the strength of Sundays finish, Ziegler was named to the division’s All-American Team. In second place from Charlotte was 8th grader Drew Van Dyke who was named the Player of the Year on his season long point total. Third place was captured by Kunakorn Tang of Raleigh.

In the Girls Division, Angelique Seymour of Fayetteville, won her third championship of the last four series tournaments. Seymour a junior from Liberty Christian Academy was a four shot winner over Bailee Twiford of Coinjock, NC. Mallory Fobes, last year’s Player of the Year finished third and shared the Player of the Year status for 2017-2018 with Seymour
