Winternational Junior Series Begins 25th Consecutive Year at Pinehurst

Village of Pinehurst, NC
November 25, 2018

The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of eight championship events for high school age boys and girls, played its first event of the 2018-2019 Season this weekend at Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. The series is the oldest of its kind in the Country, and since its inception in 1994, over 2,850 young men and women have passed through its membership. Included in the past membership are PGA Tour players Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner, Webb Simpson and Jason Kokrak. This year nearly 125 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the events on seven of the nine Pinehurst Resort courses, including two events on Donald Ross’ famous Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the players are divided into three divisions; one for Junior and Senior boys; one for Freshmen and Sophomores boys; and one for Girls. This season kicked off on the Pinehurst No. 8 course where nearly 50 players started their bid towards player of the year honors.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division Jacob Conklin a Freshman from Cary, NC scored a 76+84=160 for a four shot victory in his first Winternational Championship. Conklin who attends the Northwood School took at four shot lead after Saturday’s first round on the basis of his three birdies which helped him to a 38+38=76. In the runner-up position was Chris Ha an eighth grader from Fayetteville, NC. Peter Nusbaum a freshman from Pittsboro, NC captured third with is 82-84 total.

In the Girls Division, Bailee Twiford a senior from Coinjock, NC, won her first Winternational tournament on the strength of her consecutive 78’s for a 156 total. She came from two shots off the first round lead and defeated Mallory Fobes of Pinehurst, NC by two shots. Fobes was last year’s Co-Player of the Year and is a two-time Winternational All-American team member who will be attending the University of North Carolina Wilmington in the fall of 2019. In third place another shot back was Kelley Topiwala of Matthews, NC.

Chase Clayton, of Locust, NC, picked up where he left off in last year’s series by winning the Junior Senior Division by a whopping 12 shots. Clayton, last year’s Player of the Year and All-American, shot 74-73 for a three over par total of 147. Tied for runner-up honors were Nate Diemer a senior from Leesville Rd. High School and Brendan Kelley of Panther Creek High School. Both scored 159 and both are residents of Raleigh, NC.
