Winternational Contestants Play Famed No. 2 and No. 1 Classic Courses

Village of Pinehurst, NC
December 16, 2018

The Winternational Junior Series played two of Pinehurst oldest courses over the weekend. Saturday’s 1st round was contested on the Famed Pinehurst No. 2, host of countless championships included the upcoming U.S. Amateur in August of 2019. This region of North Carolina known as the Sandhills proved why it is an ideal location to build golf courses. After having received over two inches of rain the prior weekend and another inch plus the night prior, aside from a few puddles the course was in great shape. Sunday’s second round greeted players with sunny skies and temperatures near 60.

The Freshman/Sophomore division needed four extra holes before Holly Springs, NC native Daniel Adkins took home his first Winternational title. Adkins played those four holes in three under par for the victory. Prior to that Adkins made two birdies in the last four holes of regulation which made it possible to catch runner-up David Olivier and force the playoff. Oliver, shot a fine three over par 75 in Saturdays opening round which gave him a three shot lead heading. In third place two shots out of the playoff was Colin Dutton of Foxfire, NC. Dutton’s 72 in the final round was instrumental in capturing third place and was the low round of the day in any division.

Owen Swavely of Morrisville, NC captured the Boys Junior/Senior Division title. Swavely, a Winternational All-American team member from last year, posted rounds of 75+78 for a 153 total. His opening round of 75 on Course No. 2 included four birdies and an eagle on the par 5 eighth hole and helped propel Swavely to a five shot victory over Owen Woods. Woods, a junior at Pernell Swett H.S. in Maxton, NC, played consistent with rounds of 79+79 in his runner-up performance. Rounding out the top three was Harrison Wierse of Wilmington, two shots back of Woods.

In the Girls Division, Angelique Seymour claimed her first win of the season. Seymour, from Fayetteville, NC, shot one-under on the back nine of Saturday’s opening round. A Co-Player of the Year in the 17-18 season, Seymour held both low rounds of the weekend with 76-77 good enough for a five shot win. Runner-up was Kelly Topiwala, a junior from Matthews, NC. Topiwala posted rounds of 80+78 for a 160 total. In third place was our other 17-18 season Co-Player of the Year, Mallory Fobes.
