Kenzel Wins First While Dutton and Clayton Claim Second Titles

Soggy conditions greeted the 43 high school boys and girls for yet another weekend in The Winternational Jr. Series. Rain earlier in the week in addition to some between rounds one and two provided wet conditions on the Fazio designed No. 6 course. However, all 36 holes were able to be completed and the season saw its first two repeat champions here in event #5.
Chase Clayton of Locust, NC won his second event of the 2018-19 season. His opening round of 69, highlighted by three birdies on the back nine, provided Clayton with a six shot lead. However, the West Stanly H.S. senior struggled in round two, posting an 11 over par 83 for a 152 total. Runner-up was Harrison Wierse a senior from Wilmington, NC. Harrison shot a 78+76=154 and trailed Clayton by only two shots at the end. In third place was Nicholas Song, a junior from Waxhaw, NC who attends the Central Academy of Technology and Arts. Song shot a75+81=156 and was tied for third with Jake Clodfelter of Trinity, NC.
In the girls division, Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines, NC won her first event with a 73+81=154. Kenzel who is a junior at Pinecrest HS began her first round with birdies on two of the first three holes and took a three shot lead into Sundays second round. Runner-up honors were awareded to Megan Kanaby of Chapel Hill, who shot a 84+74=158. Megan actually pulled within four shots of the lead after three holes in the final round but was unable to overtake Kenzel. In third place was Katelyn Kenthack a junior from the Pines Christian School in Southern Pines, NC.
The Freshman/Sophomore Division took 37 holes to determine that Collin Dutton was victorious over Cullen Campbell. Dutton a sophomore from Foxfire, NC defeated Cullen of Virginia Beach, VA on the first extra hole of a sudden death playoff. Dutton sank an 18-footer for par while Campbell missed from approximately the same distance. It was second victory of the series. In third place was Daniel Adkins Holly Springs, NC with a 85+76=161.
