  Event 7

Results will be posted after the conclusion of play on Sunday.

Village of Pinehurst, NC
February 17, 2019

The wet weather continues. Friday night rain that carried over into the morning, initially caused a one hour delay for the start of event #7. Another spout of heavy rain mid-morning then triggered another forty minute delay due to course conditions. Play finally resumed at 11 A.M., and from there temperatures dropped to mid/low 40’s and wind gusted to 20+ mph creating some tough playing conditions. However, 66 high school boys and girls powered through on the famed Pinehurst No. 2 course, which is set to host the 2019 U.S. Amateur this summer.

Joining the Winternational Jr. Series members for the second weekend in a row were 14 high school boys and girls from Scotland. The East Lothian Junior Golf League helped coordinate and support a trip for the 2nd year in a row for their top order of merit players. Their 10-day trip will be spent entirely in the Pinehurst area and provided a unique opportunity not only for the players from Scotland but for our Winternational members as well.

The Junior/Senior Boys champion had to be decided in a one-hole sudden death playoff between Sam Westwood and Owen Swavely. Westwood from Dirleton, Scotland won the initial playoff hole with a regulation par – 4 when Swavely failed to hit the green in regulation and missed a twelve-foot putt for par. Both players trailed overnight leader Harrison Wierse but caught him in Sunday’s round. Westwood took a single shot lead into the final seven holes but Swavely had two birdies to catch him in regulation. The Dirleton Scotland native is 17 years old and was quoted as saying this Winternational victory was the biggest of his young career. In third place was the overnight leader Harrison Wierse who shot a 77+77=154 total.

In the Girls Division, Mallory Fobes made it back-to-back wins by shooting 79+75=154. Fobes, last year’s co-player of the year, was five shots clear of runner-up Mara Hirtle. Fobes final round was highlighted by an eagle three on the 18th hole. Mara Hirtle garnered runner-up honors with an 82+77=159 and another former champion Jacklyn Kenzel captured third place with a 82+80=162. Hirtle and Kenzel are both juniors at Pinecrest H.S. in Pinehurst, NC.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Winternational newcomer Alan Van Asch of Raleigh, NC was the victor with a 77+75=152. Van Asch is a freshman at Leesville Rd. High School and trailed runner-up David Olivier IV by three shots after Saturday’s 1st round. Playing together on Sunday Van Asch made up five shots in the first nine holes and coasted to the win. Oliver, a winner in this series, is a seventh grader from Pageland, SC. Tied for third place were Chris Ha of Fayetteville and Scott Hana a resident of Pinehurst. Low round of the division was shot on Sunday by Luke Walmet of Mount Pleasant, SC.

The Winternational Junior Series will play its eighth and final event of the year on March 2-3 on Pinehurst No. 5. Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
