Winternationals Conclude 25th Season at Pinehurst and Name Shulby Sportsmanship Award Winner

Village of Pinehurst, NC
March 3, 2019

The final event of the Winternational Junior Series (WNJS) twenty-fifth season was played Saturday and Sunday on the Pinehurst No. 5 course. Just prior to the start of Sunday’s final round, WNJS Founder Peter DeYoung, presented the Shulby Sportsmanship Award. The Shulby award is named for Winternational Rules Official Bud Shulby and is presented to a WNJS player who exemplifies the honor, integrity, and sportsmanship that comes with the game of golf. The Shulby Award is not given annually, but rather given when a player is clearly deserving. This year, that player is Katelyn Kenthack, who becomes the first female to receive the award.

In the Girls Division Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines, NC and Mara Hirtle of Pinehurst, NC tied for low honors with 154 totals. However, Kenzel defeated Hirtle on the first play-off hole to claim the championship. Jaclyn carried a three shot lead from the opening round but was caught by Hirtle’s back-to-back birdies on the ninth and tenth holes. The two girls played even from then until the finish. In third place was Angelique Seymour of Fayetteville, NC who shot an 84+75=159. Her Sunday front nine was highlighted by three birdies and a 34 stoke total.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division Colin Dutton who was already a two-time champion in the series was victorious in the final event. He won a three man sudden death play-off to defeat Benjamin Bailey of Huntersville, NC and Rohan Saxena of Ashburn, VA. Dutton, of nearby Foxfire, birdied his final two holes in regulation to forge the three way tie.

In the Junior/Senior Division Harrison Wierse of Wilmington, NC dominated the division by scoring 73+74=147. His two round total was nine shots clear of runner-up Robert Dudeck III of Williamsburg, VA. Harrison a senior at Topsail H.S. shot consecutive low rounds in the division on both competition days. In third place was Columb Knight of Raleigh, NC who shot a 78+79=157.

The twenty-sixth annual Winternational Junior Series will commence in November of 2019 with an eight-event series. For further information contact Peter deYoung at www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com.
