Winternational Junior Series Begins 26th Consecutive Year at Pinehurst

Village of Pinehurst, NC
November 19, 2019

The Winternational Junior Series, which consists of eight championship events for high school age boys and girls, played its first event of the 2019-2020 Season this weekend at Pinehurst Resort in the Village of Pinehurst, NC. The series is the oldest of its kind in the Country, and since its inception in 1994, over 3,000 young men and women have passed through its membership. Included in the past membership are PGA Tour players Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner, Webb Simpson and Jason Kokrak. This year nearly 125 members of the Series are invited to play any or all of the events on seven of the nine Pinehurst Resort courses, including two events on Donald Ross’ famous Pinehurst No. 2.

As in past years, the players are divided into three divisions; one for Junior and Senior boys; one for Freshmen and Sophomores boys; and one for Girls. This season kicked off on the Pinehurst No. 6 course where 65 players started their bid towards player of the year honors.

In the Junior/Senior Division Robert Dudeck of Williamsburg, VA took medalist honors by two shots over Narayan Mohan of Charlotte, NC. Dudeck’s opening round of 74 was low for the division and was good enough for a one shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Mohan mounted a comeback by making birdies in two of his last four holes but still was not enough overcome Dudeck’s steady play. In third place was Jonathan Rich, a Rockingham, NC native who finished six shots off the pace after being only one back to start the final round. Rounding out the top four was Sam Haggas of Winston-Salem, NC.

Winternational Jr. Series newcomer Kyle Haas wins the opener for the Freshman/Sophomore Division. Haas, of Winston-Salem, NC opened with a solid one over par 73 in blustery conditions. He followed his 73 with a two over 74 which was enough for a five shot victory over Mason Eggleston. Eggleston, of Williamsburg, VA did not play his best in Saturday’s first round but finished with a hard-fought 74. Tying Haas for low round honors were third place finishers Gray Mitchum of Winterville, NC and Alan Van Asch who both came in with 153 two day totals.

A pair of Pinecrest High School girls finished in the top three in the 2019-2020 series opener. Mara Hirtle, a Winternational All-American from last season claimed the top spot with a stellar one over par 73 in Sunday’s final round. Hirtle, of Pinehurst, NC was one shot back after the opening round and by mid final round she had moved into first and extended her lead with birdies on holes 10 thru 12. Runner-up Kelley Topiwala of Matthews, NC made a late charge with birdies on 15 & 16 but was not enough to catch Hirtle. Also in the thick of things was North Carolina State 4-A individual champion Jaclyn Kenzel. Her closing round of 72 was low for the division and good enough to secure a third place finish. Also in a tie for third was first round leader Ella Perna of Durham, NC.
