Winternationals Take on Famed #2 Course at Pinehurst

Village of Pinehurst, NC
December 15, 2019

The Winternational Junior Series played two of Pinehurst oldest courses over the weekend. Saturday’s 1st round was contested on the Famed Pinehurst No. 2, host of countless championships included the 2019 U.S. Amateur this past August. This region of North Carolina known as the Sandhills proved why it is an ideal location to build golf courses. After having received over an inch of rain the night prior, aside from a few puddles the course was in great shape. Sunday’s second round greeted players with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 50’s.

Alan Van Asch of Raleigh, NC claimed his first victory in the 2019-2020 season series. Van Asch’s rounds of 77+71=148 narrowly edged out runner up David Oliver of Pageland, SC. Oliver was co-leading the division after Saturdays first round score of 74. However, it was Van Asch’s bogey free, one under par back nine that spelled the difference. At the fourteenth hole, Oliver still held a one shot lead but a disastrous quadruple bogey 8 on the short par 4 proved to be unrecoverable despite two late birdies. In third place was Peter Nusbaum of Pittsboro, NC who also opened with a 74 on the famed No. 2 course Saturday but struggled coming in, finishing four over in his last four holes for a 78 in round 2.

In the Girls Division, Kelley Topiwala of Matthews, NC took home top honors. Her consistent rounds of 76+78=154 was good enough of a seven shot margin over runner-up Lotte Fox. Topiwala’s opening round was highlighted by a bogey free back nine and earned her the low round award. Runner-up Fox, of Raleigh, NC had the low round on Sunday at Course No. 1 shooting a 77. In third place was 2018-2019 Season All-American, Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines, NC.

Jonathan Honeywell of Whispering Pines, NC was the model of consistency with his two rounds of 74+74=148 en route to an eleven shot margin of victory. Honeywell was so consistent in fact, he shot the same score of 37 on each of the four nines played. In the runner-up position was Robert Dudeck III of Williamsburg, VA shooting rounds of 82+77=159. Daniel Jones of Greensboro, NC rounded out the top three.

The Winternational Junior Series will play its fourth event of the year on the newly renovated Pinehurst No. 4 course and will take place January 4-5, 2020 Please visit www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com or contact Peter deYoung, Inc. at (910) 295-5661 to register or for further information.
