Hathaway, Lotte, and Bailey Claim First Titles

Village of Pinehurst, NC
January 19, 2020

Fifty high school boys and girls took to the classic Pinehurst No. 5 course for the series fifth event of the season. The Ellis Maples originally designed course works with the rolling terrain and provides a combination of water carries and elevated greens. The layout even takes players down to the far corner of Lake Pinehurst. Although the start to 2020 has been relatively mild, players were greeted with more seasonable conditions over the weekend with highs in the upper 40’s on Saturday and mid 50’s with sun on Sunday’s final round.

After a runner-up finish two weeks ago in Junior/Senior Division of Event #4, Adam Hathaway was able to claim victory here this weekend in Event #5. Hathaway, a senior out of Greenville, NC fired an opening round of 77 good enough for a one shot lead heading into Sunday. With solid second round of 40+36=76 Hathaway was able to maintain the one shot difference and take home the title. Making a run at Hathaway was runner-up Caleb Click. The high school junior, out of Fair Bluff, NC was two shots back of the leader heading into Sunday. In a late round spree, Click birdied five of seven holes to eventually tie for the lead however a costly bogey on his last hole left him in solo second. Rounding out the top three was Sam Haggas of Winston-Salem, NC with rounds of 78+77=155. Low round honors went to Jacob Girouard of Raleigh, NC who shot two-over 74 on Sunday.

Raleigh’s Lotte Fox took home her first Winternational Jr. Series win in the Girls Division. Leading by two after Saturdays first round, the high school senior post a second round 76 to finish with a seven shot margin of victory over runner-up and two-time season series champion Mara Hirtle. Hirtle of Pinehurst, NC started the final day only three shots back but struggled to get things going shooting 79+79=158. In a tie for third was a pair of Wake Forest natives. Mary Sears Brown and Heather Appelson both finished with 160 totals.

In the Freshman/Sophomore Division, Benjamin Bailey earned his first title of the season series edging out Player of the Year Points leader Alan Van Asch of Raleigh, NC. Bailey, a sophomore from Huntersville, NC opened with a two-over 74 for a two shot lead and was able to double that lead with another 74 highlighted by an eagle 2 on the Par 4 third hole. Van Asch, coming off back-to-back victories was hoping to make it three in a row but an open round of 79 put him in a tough hole five shots back. However, his second round 73 was low round for the tournament. In third place was Cameron Hardison of Greenville, NC.
