The final event of the Winternational Junior Series (WNJS) twenty-sixth season was played Saturday and Sunday on the Pinehurst No. 1 course. Just prior to the start of Sunday’s final round, WNJS Founder Peter DeYoung, announced the Shulby Sportsmanship Award. The Shulby award is presented to a WNJS player who exemplifies the honor, integrity, and sportsmanship that comes with the game of golf. An honor not given each year but was recently awarded in 2019. This year’s recipient is Thomas Reininger of Fayetteville, GA. Although Thomas could not attend the final event to receive his award, WNJS Founder Peter DeYoung and Tournament Director Brian Fahey sent along a video presentation to Thomas who was home studying for a science fair.

Gray Mitchum in the Freshman/Sophomore Boys division claimed his second title in as many events at the eighth and final event of the 2019-2020 season. In Saturday’s opening round Mitchum, of Winterville, NC, got off to a hot start making five birdies on his opening nine holes. A couple of late bogeys led to a round of 68 and a three shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round. Mitchum would need most of those three strokes as he struggled in day two with a 73 for a two day total 141. Benjamin Bailey, his nearest competitor managed a solid 71 including a birdie on 18 in the final round and finished 71+71=142 just one shot back of the champion. Low round honors however went to David Oliver of Pageland, SC who made six birdies in route to a 67 which catapulted him up five spots to finish in third, just two back of Mitchum.

Strong played continued in the Girls Division as Jaclyn Kenzel of Southern Pines strung together a stretch of six three’s on her card going three under during that span and finishing with a 71 on the day, 147 total for the tournament and a first place finish. Nicole Nash (Charlotte, NC), the first round leader, opened with a 73 but struggled on the back-nine Sunday and went five over in a four-hole stretch to finish second overall. In third place was Ella Perna of Durham, NC with rounds of 75+78=153.

In the Junior/Senior Division, Owen Woods of Maxton, NC earned his first title of the season. His consistent play and rounds of 74+75=149 were good enough for a four-shot margin of victory. Adam Hathaway (Greenville, NC), the 2019-2020 Player of the Year came in second while Justin Nagy of Apex, NC and Jonathan Rich of Rockingham, NC rounded out the top three.

The twenty-seventh annual Winternational Junior Series will commence in November of 2020 with an eight-event series. For further information contact Peter deYoung at www.juniorgolfpinehurst.com.
